Melbourne String Ensemble Programs

Entry to the MSE is by audition with the musical director, Fintan Murphy.  Auditions are held prior to any rehearsal or by arrangement with Fintan at another time. Entry is at the discretion of the musical director. As a general guide, violinists need to be at least 8th+ grade AMEB standard and cellists 7th grade AMEB standard or equivalent.

Melbourne String Ensemble

Melbourne String Ensemble (MSE), directed by Fintan Murphy, offers students an unparalleled opportunity to perform high quality repertoire with some of Melbourne’s most talented young string musicians. Students develop ensemble, chamber and advanced musicianship skills and regularly take part in masterclasses with some of Australia’s most accomplished professional musicians.

Intermediate Melbourne String Ensemble

Intermediate Melbourne String Ensemble (IMSE), also directed by Fintan Murphy, began in 2014.  IMSE advances the skills of players who are performing at a high level but are not quite ready for the senior group. Students in IMSE develop ensemble skills and the technical mastery necessary for advanced ensemble participation. To develop their musical teamwork, the IMSE performs unconducted.

Junior Melbourne String Ensemble

Junior Melbourne String Ensemble (JMSE), provides a warm and nurturing environment for our youngest members and focuses on developing their ensemble and performance skills. Students develop a love of orchestral playing as they rehearse and perform an eclectic range of repertoire.
