Ready to join MSE?
MSE welcomes string musicians of every stage - from a first ensemble experience through to advanced chamber playing. Auditions are held for each of our five ensembles, so you can find the right fit for where you are now.
What to expect at your audition
Auditions are relaxed, supportive, and designed to help us understand where your child is at as a musician. It is not an assessment. You'll typically be asked to:
Perform 2 short, contrasting pieces or excerpts of your choice
Play a few scales
Sight-reading
Our directors run every audition, so it's also a great first chance to meet the person who may be leading your child’s rehearsals. We're not just listening for technique - we're getting a sense of how your child listens, responds, and work alongside other musicians, since that's what ensemble playing is really about.
Which ensemble?
AMEB grades below are a rough guide only - certification isn't required, as our directors assess each musician directly at audition. Ensembles aren't defined by age either. Playing in an ensemble is a different skill from playing as a soloist, so where your child is placed depends on musical ability alongside listening skills, behaviour, and maturity. In other words, how well suited they are to playing alongside others, not on technical ability alone. Ensemble playing is a continuation and refinement of a musician's journey, not a separate ladder to climb.

Our managers and Music Directors will then take it from there, making sure your child ends up in the ensemble where they'll thrive. You’ll be contacted shortly!

MSE Arietta
AMEB Preliminary - Grade 3 as a guide. For musicians new to their instrument and to ensemble playing. Open to any age, so long as they're curious to discover what it feels like to make music as part of a group. It's a relaxed, low-pressure introduction alongside like-minded children enjoying the genuinely impressive music they make together.
MSE Prelude
For musicians with some playing experience, approximately at AMEB grade 3-6 level. Building on early ensemble experience at MSE Arietta or at school, ready to learn what playing as part of a group really demands with a focus on listening, following cues and responsiveness to the group.
MSE Intermezzo
For more capable players at the AMEB Grade 6+ level, developing their own practice instincts and sharpening both technique and musical teamwork. Players at this stage are expected to listen with greater nuance and take on real responsibility for how the group behaves and performs together.
MSE Chamber
A self-directed, small-group ensemble for musicians playing at approximately AMEB Grade 7+ level, who bring strong personal preparation and initiative to rehearsals. Direction is provided by a Music Director, but Chamber groups are expected to take real ownership - understanding what small-group playing demands of each individual player, and working together to reach a shared musical goal.
MSE
Our flagship ensemble, directed by Fintan Murphy, for our most advanced and independent musicians. MSE performs high-quality repertoire, takes part in masterclasses with leading professionals, and tours internationally - many of our soloists and most accomplished alumni have come through this ensemble. It's often where a musician's MSE journey culminates, with many staying on for years as they continue to grow.
