Melbourne Sring Ensemble is a dynamic and exciting orchestra for advanced string students, performing high-quality repertoire. Lead by well-known String pedagogue and lecturer Fintan Murphy, MSE is a youth orchestra with high musical expectations of its members.
A leading youth orchestra in Melbourne for 30 years, MSE performs widely in Australia and overseas. Entry is by audition. Since it’s beginnings in 1985, MSE has grown to include two additional orchestras for developing musicians, the Intermediate Melbourne String Ensemble (IMSE) and the Junior Melbourne String Ensemble (JMSE).
IMSE, also directed by Fintan Murphy, began in 2014. IMSE advances the skills of players of Grade 7 AMEB standard violin and viola and Grade 5 AMEB cello and double bass (or equivalent standard). This group develops high-level ensemble skills and the technical mastery necessary for advanced ensemble participation. Aimed at young players who are advanced for their age, IMSE is a dynamic, high expectation group.
JMSE is a junior group directed by Erica Russell that began in 2011. Comprised of players in Years 4-8 at school (approx 9-13 years of age) with a minimum standard of Grade 3+ AMEB, JMSE provides a unique opportunity for quality ensemble playing for string players who are advanced for their age and ready for a challenge.
